Welcoming a newborn into your world is magical — but let’s be real, it can also feel overwhelming. Those first few weeks are full of joy, sleepless nights, and a whole lot of learning on the go. After four babies, I’ve learned exactly which items make life easier, calmer, and more organised.. As a mum of four, I know first hand how those early days feel: beautiful, overwhelming, and full of “am I doing this right?” moments. Having the right essentials on hand can make this transition smoother and more enjoyable.
That’s exactly why I put together this newborn survival kit — not the Pinterest-perfect version, but the real one mums actually use at 3am when the baby won’t settle and you’re running on two hours of sleep.
These are the 10 essentials I genuinely relied on with all my babies, the things that made life easier, calmer, and a little more organised. Think of this as a warm hug from one mum to another, sharing what truly helps in those early weeks. These are the things I’d never start the newborn stage without.

1. Soft, Comfortable Clothing
Newborns need clothing that is gentle on their sensitive skin and easy to put on and take off. Choose soft cotton onesies, sleepers, and hats that keep your baby warm without overheating. Look for clothes with snap buttons or zippers that make diaper changes quick and hassle-free.
Tiny Treasure Tip: Always keep a spare set of clothes in your nappy bag — trust me, newborns love surprising you.

Tiny Treasure Tip: Have at least 5-7 sets of clothes ready, as newborns often need frequent changes due to spills and diaper leaks.
2. Diapers and Wipes
Diapers are the backbone of any newborn survival kit. Whether you prefer disposable or cloth diapers, stock up on a good supply before your baby arrives. Newborns typically go through 8-12 diapers a day, so having extras on hand is crucial. Baby wipes should be gentle and fragrance-free to avoid irritation. Some parents also keep cotton balls and warm water nearby for sensitive skin.
From my experience, the first few weeks I use cotton pads and warm water. Once I transition roughly around 6 weeks later I begin to use wipes. With my first and last children, I used KIT & KIN with water wipes, they would rash up very quickly when I used anything else. However with the Middle bambinos I used Pampers and the amazon baby wipes. The wipes were easy on the skin and done the job.

3. Swaddle Blankets
Swaddling helps babies feel secure and can improve their sleep quality. Choose lightweight, breathable blankets made from cotton or muslin. These blankets are versatile and can also be used as burp cloths, nursing covers, or stroller covers. Don’t stress if you don’t have everything straight away — babies need love more than stuff.

Monitoring your baby’s temperature is vital, especially during the first few months. A reliable digital thermometer designed for infants allows you to check for fever quickly and accurately. 7. Gentle Baby Skincare Products

9. Baby Carrier or Wrap
